Kuma launched the original Ashwood model in the fall of 2009 and then the smaller version, the original Aspen in 2010. These two stoves/inserts were the first, and only, models made by Kuma that used the popular compressed vermiculite baffle materials. Many stoves and fireplace brands continue to use this product as a refractory material in baffles and fireboxes.
The warranty period on these materials in a Kuma wood stove or insert is 3 years. The warranty allows for a one-time replacement of the boards and insulation within the first 3 years from the purchase date. Any parts replaced under the warranty have a 90-day warranty.
Recently, the durability of this baffle type has come into question. While there has always been some amount of failure, we saw the vast majority of baffle sets lasting, in some cases, up to 8 or 9 years. However, there is a noticeable trend in the failure rate where baffle sets are surviving for a shorter period of time, in some cases just a season or two.
Since this is a product that we do not manufacture, and therefore have no control over the quality, we are not able to provide any warranty beyond the 3-year promise.
We have launched a supplemental baffle support for the Ashwood model. It is recommended that this supplemental support be added with the next baffle replacement in your Ashwood stove or fireplace insert. The stainless steel trays will extend the lifespan of the baffle by:
- Protecting the boards from extreme heat and flame contact. The dissipation of heat will reduce the rapid temperature swing from cool to hot during start-up and reduce the amount of thermal shock to the boards and help reduce cracking.
- Providing a contained area for the baffle boards. By containing the baffle boards within a tray, they will continue to function even if cracking occurs due to heat and/or impact. This allows the boards to keep providing the important function of a thermal barrier, even when cracked.
