ALWAYS UNPLUG YOUR BLOWER BEFORE DOING ANY MAINTENANCE.
IF YOUR BLOWER IS MAKING EXCESSIVE NOISE:
#1 Cause - Dirt or Ash Build-up: Accumulated dust or ash on the blower blades can cause noise. Regular cleaning can help prevent this issue and extend the life of your blower.
Solution: Remove the blower and dust off the fan blades. This is best accomplished by using canned or compressed air. You will likely be amazed by the amount of dust that will clean off. Wear a dust mask so that you are not inhaling the dust. This is always the 1st step when you are experiencing noise problems.
#2 Cause - Loose components: Over time, screws, in the blower assembly may become loose.
Solution: Check and tighten any loose parts to reduce noise. Specifically make sure that the blower unit is solidly mounted to the stove. Vibrations can be transferring to the stove causing it to make noise.#3 Cause: Imbalanced or misaligned blower blades: If the blades of the blower are imbalanced, it can cause vibration and noise.
Solution: Ensure that the blades are clean, dust will accumulate unevenly, causing an imbalance in the rotation. Also make sure that the blades of the fan are not touching the blower housing, this can cause a scraping or ticking noise. The housing can sometimes be flexed to eliminate contact between the blades and the housing.
#4 Cause - Worn bearings: The blower motor has bearings that can wear out over time, this is especially true if the blower is not regularly cleaned. If the bearings are worn, they may produce a squealing or grinding noise.
Solution: The motor or the entire blower unit may need to be replaced.IF YOUR BLOWER WILL NOT RUN, OR RUNS INTERMITTENTLY:
#1 Cause - Thermostat sensor is not coming on: Many Kuma wood stove blowers have a heat sensor that touches a hot area of the stove. The blower will not come on until the thermostat senses that the stove is warm.
Solution: Wait for your stove to heat up and see if the blower come on. Check that the thermostat is contacting the face of the stove. The thermostat disk is a nickel sized round piece of metal that is touching the stove.
If you are sure that the stove is hot and the disk is making good contact, then the thermostat disk may need to be replaced. Replacing the Thermostat Disk.
#2 Cause - Speed Control Switch Malfunction: If the blower will only run at certain speeds or makes a crackling sound when adjusting the speed then the speed control is bad.
Solution: The speed control switch needs to be replaced. How to replace the speed control switch#3 Cause Overheating or Seized Motor: The blower motor spends it's entire life in a hot and dusty environment. If the blower makes a humming sound but will not turn, the blower motor itself may be experiencing problems due to overheating.
Solution: If the motor is making unusual noises, the motor may need to be replaced.
Blowers can be returned to the factory for repair. A repair cost is typically about $150, this is roughly 1/2 the cost of a new replacement blower. See the links below for purchasing a replacement blower for your stove:
